Community Development
The Kennedy Heights Community Council includes a Commercial and Office Development Committee (CODC). Their stated goals according to the 2003 Kennedy Heights Comprehensive Plan:
  • Develop a planned and coordinated business area along Montgomery Road, containing a mix of commercial and service uses to attract users from the immediate community and beyond
  • Create an image for Kennedy Heights, which suggests a lively and unique environment with a diversity of goods and services conducive for socializing and doing business
Kennedy Heights Urban Design Plan
On October 19th, Kennedy Heights Community Council (KHCC) received the unanimous recommendation of the City of Cincinnati Planning Commission to adopt an Urban Design Plan (UDP) and an Urban Design Overlay District (UDOD) for the Kennedy Heights Business District, located along Montgomery Road between Tyne and Coleridge Avenues.

The UDP and UDOD will next be submitted to the Economic Development Committee of City Council chaired by Councilman Chris Bortz. The Economic Development Committee will review the proposed plan before submitting it to a vote by the full council. The Economic Development Committee has yet to schedule the date for that review, but the earliest date is the first week in November. We assume City Council would not review that matter until late November or early December.

The Urban Design Plan (UDP) includes recommendations for future business district improvements which we believe will enhance the safety, appearance, and quality of life for our residents, business owners and users of our business district. This plan has already been reviewed by Community Council and recommended to the city by resolution in June of this year.

If approved by City Council, the UDOD will establish guidelines for future development including, but not limited to, redevelopment projects, signage, and façade alterations. At the current time, it is KHCC’s intention to request that the UDOD be comparable to the UDOD currently in place for the Pleasant Ridge Business District which lies ½ mile to the west. Current UDOD standards can be viewed within the City of Cincinnati’s Municipal Zoning Code, sections 1437.01 thru 1437.13.

Community Building Institute Final Report
The Community Building Institute conducted research on Kennedy Heights in 2006 to help us identify some of our assets and challenges and to recommend ways to work better together.

The final report found that there were four key strategic areas where many residents focused energy: safety, business district revitalization, education and the arts. The report has a recommendations on how to effect better collaboration amongst these groups. We'd like to share them with you here.

KHCC is planning an open Town Hall meeting in 2008 so we can share our stories with each other on how we contribute to our neighborhood, and to decide together where KHCC should focus its efforts regarding the Comprehensive Plan. Byron White will be leading that discussion.
